The machine
A hemispherical white base with the LCD floating on a chrome arm. Most of the computer lives in the base; the screen pivots and tilts on a friction joint that still works on machines two decades later.
Why it matters
Mac OS X — Unix at the bottom, a modern GUI on top — found its feet on the G4 iMac. It pointed at what the entire industry would converge on a few years later.
