The machine

The first IBM PC shipped with a built-in hard drive. PC DOS 2.0, released alongside it, introduced the hierarchical file system Unix users had been enjoying for years.

Why it matters

Hard drives moved from optional peripheral to default expectation. The XT also dropped the cassette port — nobody noticed.
